What Is the Sundarbans?
Straddling the border of Bangladesh and India, the Sundarbans is the world's largest contiguous mangrove forest. The Bangladesh portion — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — covers roughly 6,000 square kilometres and is home to the iconic Bengal tiger, spotted deer, estuarine crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species. It's a destination unlike any other in South Asia.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal window is October to March, when the weather is dry, cooler, and wildlife sightings are more frequent. Avoid the monsoon season (June to September) when flooding makes access dangerous and many tour operators suspend services.
Getting There
- From Dhaka: Take a bus or private car to Khulna (approx. 5–6 hours), then a boat from Mongla or Khulna to the forest entry points.
- By train: The Dhaka–Khulna rail route is scenic and comfortable (Sundarban Express or Chitra Express).
- By air: Jessore (now Jashore) airport is the nearest. Domestic flights from Dhaka take under an hour, followed by a road transfer to Khulna.
Entry Requirements & Permits
All visitors must obtain a permit from the Forest Department. This is typically arranged through your tour operator. Independent entry into the core zones is restricted — for good reason, as the forest can be genuinely dangerous without a trained guide. You'll also need to register at the forest range offices.
Choosing a Tour Package
Most visitors book 2–3 night package tours departing from Khulna or Mongla. A good package should include:
- Accommodation on a houseboat or vessel
- All meals
- Licensed forest guide and armed escort (required)
- Permits and entry fees
- Smaller country boats for creek exploration
Compare packages carefully — cheaper options often cut corners on safety or guide quality.
What to See & Do
Wildlife Spotting
The Bengal tiger is elusive but tracks are frequently spotted near waterholes and riverbanks. Spotted deer, wild boar, and river otters are commonly seen. Irrawaddy dolphins are often spotted in the rivers. Birders will love the kingfishers, eagles, and herons.
Boat Rides Through the Creeks
Navigating the narrow, shadowy creeks on a small boat is the most atmospheric way to experience the Sundarbans. Early morning rides offer the best wildlife encounters and stunning light.
Hiron Point & Kotka
These two areas offer the best watchtowers and walking trails (always with a guide). Hiron Point is known for deer, while Kotka is better for tiger territory.
Safety Tips
- Never wander away from your guide — tiger attacks, while rare, do occur.
- Do not feed or approach wildlife.
- Carry insect repellent and wear full sleeves in the evenings.
- Drink only bottled or filtered water.
- Inform someone of your itinerary before departing.
What to Pack
Light, breathable clothing in neutral colours, sturdy sandals or shoes, sunscreen, a hat, binoculars, and a good camera. Power banks are essential as electricity on boats can be limited.
The Sundarbans is one of those rare places that stays with you long after you leave. Plan carefully, travel responsibly, and it will be the highlight of any Bangladesh trip.
